Course Contents:
UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology: Nature, Definition, Scope and Branches, Brief concept of Schools of Psychology: Behaviorism and Gestalt; Methods: Introspection, Observation, Experimentation, Interview, Field Study, Clinical and Questionnaire Method; Psychology in Modern India
UNIT 2: SENSATION, ATTENTION AND PERCEPTION
Sensation: Definition and Characteristics.
Attention: Meaning, Phenomena - Shift, fluctuation, and oscillation, determinants of attention.
Perception: Meaning and characteristics, Perceptual Organization (Gestalt School), Depth Perception: Meaning, Perceptual Constancies, Monocular and Binocular Cues, Distance, and movement perception; Errors in perception: Illusions and Hallucination.
UNIT 3: LEARNING& MEMORY
- Learning: Introduction, Principles and types of Learning, Classical conditioning, Operant conditioning, Observational and Cognitive learning; Learning strategies
- Memory: Basic processes, Models of memory: Information processing (Atkinson & Shiffrin), Levels of processing, Parallel Distributed processing model, Forgetting - causes of forgetting (Trace decay theories, interference theories, motivated forgetting), Improving memory
UNIT 4: EMOTION AND MOTIVATION
- Emotion: Components, types of emotion, theories of emotion (James-Lange theory, Cannon Bard theory and Cognitive theories)
- Motivation: Concepts, types, and theories (Maslow’s need hierarchy theory, McClelland’s theories of achievement motivation, and Ryan and Deci’s Self-Determination theory), motivational conflicts.
PRACTICUM:
1. Experiment on Attention – fluctuation of attention
2. Experiment on Memory – spaced vs. unspaced and whole vs. part techniques of memory
