UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION:

Role of Statistics in Psychological Research; Descriptive and Inferential Statistics; Variables: Concept, types and controlling techniques, Measurement Scales

UNIT 2: DATA ORGANIZATION AND GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION

Organizing Quantitative Data; constructing a grouped frequency distribution, a relative frequency distribution and a cumulative frequency distribution; Computation of Percentiles and Percentile Ranks; Graphical representation of data: Histogram; Frequency Polygon; Bar Diagram; Pie Chart; Cumulative Frequency Graph; Factors Affecting the Shape of Graphs

UNIT 3: MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY AND VARIABILITY

Mean, Median& Mode; Properties and Relative Advantages and Disadvantages, Range; Interquartile and the Semi-Interquartile Range; Average Deviation; Variance; Standard Deviation; Properties and Comparison of Measures of Variability; Standard Scores (z-score)

UNIT 4: THE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

The Nature and Properties of the Normal Probability Distribution; The Standard Normal Curve: The Normal Curve as a Model for Real Variables; The Normal Curve as a Model for Sampling Distributions; Properties of z scores; Divergence from Normality (Skewness and Kurtosis)

UNIT 5: CORRELATION

Meaning, Historical Perspective; Scatter plot of Bivariate Distributions; Calculating Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, Spearman’s Rank-Order Correlation Coefficient

UNIT 6: INTRODUCTION TO INFERENTIAL STATISTICS AND HYPOTHESIS TESTING

The meaning of Statistical Inference and Hypothesis Testing; Null and the Alternative Hypotheses; One-Tailed and Two-Tailed Tests; Steps for Hypothesis Testing; t-test-concept, assumption and computation; Analysis of Variance -Concept, assumptions and computation of One -Way ANOVA, Post hoc analysis; The Statistical Decision regarding Retention and Rejection of Null Hypothesis.I nterpreting the result of hypothesis testing: A Statistically Significant Difference versus a Practically Important Difference; Errors in Hypothesis Testing; Levels of Significance versus p-Values, Degrees of Freedom for Tests.
