MASTER DEGREE IN EDUCATION

as per N.E.P. 2020

w.e.f July 2026

Vision

The M.A. Programme in Education is fundamentally constructed as an advanced liberal arts discipline rather than a purely technical or training-centric track. To fully understand its vision, it is crucial to draw a clear distinction between this degree and a Master of Education (M.Ed.). While the M.Ed. serves as a professional, practitioner-led degree designed explicitly to train teacher educators and school classroom instructors, this M.A. framework approaches education from an analytical, systemic, and multi-disciplinary perspective.

The primary ethos of the program is to immerse postgraduate scholars in contemporary methodologies, administrative paradigms, and organizational management techniques. Rather than focusing solely on isolated classroom teaching, the curriculum emphasizes systemic reform, educational leadership, and administrative competence. By exploring macro-level educational theories, students develop a deep understanding of institutional frameworks and organizational behavior. The overarching goal is to graduate conscious, visionary leaders who view educational environments not merely as factories of rote learning, but as complex social structures requiring ethical management, quality assurance, and sustainable innovation.

Core Educational Directives

The architectural design of the curriculum is guided by five primary academic directives intended to expand the student’s scholarly scope:

  • Cultivating Discipline-Specific Depth: To transition students from general educational concepts to a highly specialized, nuanced mastery of Education as an independent field of scientific inquiry.
  • Deconstructing Foundational Theories: To guide learners through a rigorous exploration of historical, psychological, sociological, and philosophical ideas, introducing them to the foundational thinkers who shaped the global discourse on learning.
  • Translating Cognition into Career Assets: To ensure that abstract concepts and cognitive frameworks are practically applicable, equipping students with the professional skills required to excel in educational administration, policymaking, publishing, and socio- educational corporate sectors.
  • Analyzing Multi-Dimensional Societal Factors: To train scholars to critically assess how economic realities, cultural shifts, political ideologies, and historical contexts continuously shape local and global educational environments.
  • Building Leadership Capabilities: To develop proactive, ethical decision-making skills and strategic thinking, enabling students to drive positive institutional changes and lead collaborative initiatives successfully.

Operational Mechanics & Evaluation Design

The operational framework of this post-graduate degree is designed around a rigorous credit and grading structure to ensure continuous academic excellence:

  • Macro Credit & Marks Distribution: The entire master’s program is valued at a cumulative total of 1200 marks, which is split equally into 300 marks per semester across a strict four-semester cycle.
  • Course and Credit Architecture: Each individual semester requires students to master 6 distinct courses. Every single course carries a weight of 50 marks and is mapped to a standard 4-credit value, establishing a balanced, rigorous workload for postgraduate students.
  • Dual Assessment Blueprint: The program moves away from high-stakes single examinations by adopting a continuous assessment model divided into a strict 80:20 ratio:
    • Summative End-Semester Examination (80% / 40 Marks): A formal, comprehensive terminal assessment testing deep analytical understanding and theoretical synthesis at the close of each semester cycle.
    • Continuous Internal Assessment (20% / 10 Marks): A multifaceted, ongoing evaluation designed to assess real-world academic skills. Instead of relying solely on written tests, this incorporates mandatory student oral presentations, specialized research essays, topic-specific assignments, and formative mid-term examinations.
