Practical/Theory: Theory

Course Objective: This course is designed with the aim of building required knowledge and understanding of Business Statistics among the student. The course seeks to give detailed knowledge about the subject matter by instilling them basic ideas about Business Statistics. This will also help them to familiarize with different components and applications of statistics in business and to make them able to understand and apply the concept of central tendency, dispersion, correlation and regression, probability and sampling.

Learning Outcome: After carefully studying the course the students will be able to gain the required knowledge about basic concepts of Statistics. It will help to understand the concepts and measurement of central tendency, know about correlation and regression analysis and develop knowledge about the sampling and probability.

Course Contents

Unit 1: Introduction (Lectures: 15)

Concept, Meaning, Features, Importance & Limitations of Statistics, Types of Data, Classification & Tabulation, Frequency distribution & Graphical Representation of data.

Unit 2: Measures of central tendency and Dispersion (Lectures: 20)

Measures of Central Tendency (Mean, Median, Mode), Properties of a good measure of average; Measures of dispersion (Range, Quartile Deviation, Mean Deviation and Standard Deviation), Properties of a good measure of variation; Measures of Skewness & Kurtosis.

Unit 3: Correlation and Regression Analysis (Lectures: 20)

Meaning and types of correlation, Simple correlation, Scatter diagram method, Karl Pearson’s Coefficient of correlation, Significance of correlation, Meaning and Concept of Regression, Regression lines, Regression Equations and Regression Coefficient.

Unit 4: Theory of Probability (Lectures: 15)

Probability: Concept, Events, Addition Law, Conditional Probability, Multiplication Law & Baye’s theorem [Simple numerical]. Probability Distribution: Binomial, Poisson and Normal.

Unit 5: Sampling (Lectures: 10)

Sampling: Meaning of Sample and Population, Method of Sampling, Sampling and Non-sampling Errors, Test of hypothesis, Type-I and Type-II Errors, Large sample tests.
