Course Objective: Course Objectives The aim of the course is to build understanding of Mathematics in business and managerial perspective among the student. The course seeks to give knowledge about calculative and quantitative topics by instilling them basic ideas to take batter decision in management as well as use in business.

Learning Outcome: Course Outcomes On completion of the course, learners will prove a) The understanding of the basic concepts of business maths and apply them to create, solve and interpret application and solve problems in business and management. b) Capability to solve problems on Indices, Progressions and Logarithms. c) Capability to solve problems on Permutation and Combination and also Coordinate Geometry for managerial application. d) Ability to apply the concept of Determinant and Matrix, Calculus  and apply them in business life.

SEMESTER V

Paper 1: Business Mathematics

(4 Credits)

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to build understanding of Mathematics in business and managerial perspective among the student. The course seeks to give knowledge about calculative and quantitative topics by instilling them basic ideas to take batter decision in management as well as use in business.

Course Outcomes

On completion of the course, learners will prove

a) The understanding of the basic concepts of business maths and apply them to create, solve and interpret application and solve problems in business and management.

b) Capability to solve problems on Indices, Progressions and Logarithms.

c) Capability to solve problems on Permutation and Combination and also Coordinate Geometry for managerial application.

d) Ability to apply the concept of Determinant and Matrix, Calculus and apply them in business life.

Course Content

Unit 1: Indices, Progressions and Logarithms (Lectures: 15)

Laws of Indices; Arithmetic and Geometric Progression with Business Applications; Logarithms-Definitions, Laws, Basic Properties; Antilogarithm-Characteristics;

Unit 2: Permutation and Combination (Lectures: 8)

Permutation- Definition, General Principle, Permutation of things when they are (i) all different (ii) not all different (iii) repeated (iv) in a ring&line; Restricted Permutation; Combination– Definition, Combination of things when they are all different and not all different, Restricted Combination.

Unit 3: Coordinate Geometry (Lectures: 10)

Elements, Coordinates of points in a plane, Distance between two given points, Division of a line segment in a given ratio. Straight line- General equations, equations of lines parallel to axes, equation of a line through two given points– intercept form and perpendicular form.

Unit 4: Determinant and Matrix (Lectures: 12)

Determinant– concepts, types, properties; addition and multiplication of determinants; Cramer’s Rule; Matrix– definition, types; addition and Multiplication of matrices; rank of a matrix; inverse of a matrix, solution of linear equations by matrix method.

Unit 5: Calculus (Lectures: 15)

Mathematical functions, Concepts of limit and continuity of a function; Derivative of a function, Rules for differentiation of functions; Integration- Standard forms, Methods of integration- by substitution and parts; Definite integration; Finding areas in simple cases.
