Syllabus & Course Curriculam
Course Type: MAJ-14
Semester: 8
Course Code: BGELMAJ14S
Course Title: Advanced Geological Field Work
(L-P-Tu): 0-4-0
Credit: 4
Practical/Theory: Practical
Course Objective: The objective is to inculcate a transparent idea of spatial & temporal distribution of rocks along with their paragenesis. For sake of mineral exploration, mapping idea is a pre requisition. Field work inculcates an accretion of knowledge and get them equipped with industrial orientation.
Learning Outcome: One must have field exposure. Natural happenings and terrestrial and even cosmic events to some extent has some form of bearings or signatures encrypted on crustal units called rocks, and as a geologist, one has to unearth that to interpret what happened in remote past at a particular stage of crustal evolution. It benefits students of geology to become industry ready.
Part 1: Field Work (3 credits)
Unit-I:
Geological mapping techniques, Mapping structural geology features: faults, folds, inclined bedding, cleavages, foliations and understanding the interaction between topographic and geologic structures.
Unit-II:
Trend, plunge, Rake/Pitch, Stereoplots of linear and planar structures, Orientation analyses
Unit-III:
Collection of sedimentological, stratigraphic and paleontological details and their representation
Unit-IV:
Facies concept and its spatio-temporal relation (Walther’s Law) and concept of facies distribution at basinal-scale
Unit-V
Fossils sampling techniques and their descriptions
Unit-VI:
Basics of field data collection, analyses, interpretation, geological report writing and viva voce.
Part 2: Computer applications in geology (1 credits)
Computer application for geostatistics and geology: spread packages for calculations, drawing and plotting packages (Corel draw and grapher)
Data analysis: Statistical data analysis through computer: mean, median, varience, sorting, skewness, kurtosis etc.
Frequency Distribution: Histogram, Frequency Polygon and Ogives and plots.
