Course Title: Phanerozoic Stratigraphy of India

Practical/Theory: Theory

Course Objective: Stratigraphy deals with stratified rocks. A stratum of rock gets formed during a specific time span overlain and underlain by younger and older rock respectively.

Learning Outcome: Students learn to unearth the information encrypted in a stratum of rock to interpret and correlate remote past with special thrust on Indian context.

Theory:

Unit I: Introduction

1. Definition.

2. Important Stratigraphic boundaries during Phanerozoic time in India -

1. Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.

2. Permian-Triassic boundary, and

3. Precambrian- Cambrian boundary,

Unit II: Important Palaeozoic successions in India

1. Important Palaeozoic successions in India with emphasis on succession, lithology, flora and fauna, correlation and palaeoenvironment of the following:

1. Paleozoic Succession of Kashmir

2. Stratigraphy Structure of Gondwana basins.

3. Mesozoic stratigraphy of India:

4. Triassic successions of Spiti,

5. Jurassic of Kutch

6. Triassic and Jurassic non marine successions of peninsular India (Upper Gondwana formations, relevant Formations of Rajasthan basin)

7. Cretaceous, successions of Cauvery basin

8. Lameta and Jabalpur Formations

2. Cenozoic stratigraphy of India:

1. Siwalik successions,

2. Assam, Andaman and Arakan basins.

Unit III: Stratigraphy of the intertrappeans

1. Deccan,

2. Rajmahal,

3. Sylhet Trap
