Course Title: Principles of Stratigraphy and Precambrian Stratigraphy of India

Course Objective: Principle of Stratigraphy imparts the basic knowledge about the concept of stratigraphy, the basic stratigraphic sub-divisions and geological time scale.
Learning Outcome: students will gather knowledge about regional examples of stratigraphic horizons, as well as earliest timeline of formation of peninsular India in the geological history of earth.
Theory:
Unit I: Principles of stratigraphy
Fundamentals of lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and chronostratigraphy.
Introduction to concepts of dynamic stratigraphy (chemostratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, Magneto-stratigraphy, sequence stratigraphy).
Relevance of Type section. Concepts of Stratotypes. Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP)
Principles of stratigraphic correlation.
Unit II: Code of stratigraphic nomenclature
International Stratigraphic Code – development of a standardized stratigraphic nomenclature with Indian examples
Unit III: Principles of stratigraphic analysis Facies concept in stratigraphy
Walther’s Law of Facies.
Concept of paleogeographic reconstruction
Unit IV: Stratigraphic boundaries in India
Archaean-Proterozoic boundary.
Precambrian-Cambrian boundary and their status in global perspective.
Unit V: Physiographic and tectonic subdivisions of India
Brief introduction to the physiographic and tectonic subdivisions of India
Introduction to Indian Shield, Craton
Introduction to Indian Precambrian belts.
Introduction to Proterozoic basins of India
Unit VI: Geologic evolution Important Precambrian terrains
Geologic evolution with emphasis on sedimetation, lithology, magmatism, structure, metamorphism and geochronology of: Singhbhum, Dharwar, Rajasthan, Central India and Eastern Ghats.
Vindhyan and Cudappah basins of India.
Peninsula and of Extra-peninsula (Lesser Himalaya)
