Course Objective: Course Objectives: • Introduce fundamental concepts, components, and principles of computers. • Provide a comprehensive understanding of computer structure, functioning, and component interactions. • Familiarize students with input and output devices and their functionalities. • Develop knowledge of computer memory and storage devices, including types and characteristics. • Enable proficiency in computer languages and software, including effective programming language and tool usage.
Learning Outcome: Course Outcomes: After the completion of this course, students will be able to: • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of fundamental concepts and principles underlying computer systems. • Analyze and explain computer structure, operation, and hardware-software interactions. • Identify and utilize input and output devices commonly used in computer systems. • Comprehend computer memory and storage devices, including types, capacities, and functionalities. • Demonstrate proficiency in programming languages and software tools for algorithm implementation and computer system manipulation.
Syllabus:
Unit I: Theory Credit: 2 (L 30)
Introduction to Computer: Computer Characteristics, Concept of Hardware, Software, Evolution of Computer and Generations, Types of Computers. [L 3]
Structure and Working of Computer: Functional Block Diagram of Computer. CPU, ALU, Memory Unit, Bus Structure of Digital Computer: Address, Data, and Control Bus. [L 3]
Input/Output Devices: Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner, MICR, OMR. Output Devices: VDU, Printers: Dot Matrix, Daisy-wheel, Inkjet, Laser, Line Printers, and Plotters. [L 3]
Computer Memory: Memory: RAM, ROM, PROM, EPROM. Secondary Storage Devices: Magnetic Tape, Magnetic Disk, Compact Disk. [L 4]
Computer Language and Software: Algorithms, Flowcharts, Machine Language, Assembly Language, High-level Language, Assembler, Compiler, Interpreter. Software: System and Application Software. [L 4]
Operating System: Functions of Operating System, Types of Operating Systems, Introduction and Features of LINUX OS. [L 4]
Networking: Basic Elements of a Communication System, Data Transmission Media, Topologies, LAN, MAN, WAN, Internet. [L 4]
Microsoft Office: Introduction to MS Office: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint. [L 5]
Unit II: MS Office Lab Credit: 2 (L 60)
Practical part will be based upon the modules covered in the theory part.
