Course Objective: The objective of this course is to provide learners the concept, principles, role and application of management and managerial functions as well as behavioural issues in organization.
Learning Outcome: On completion of this course, the learners will be able to understand meaning of business management, principles, theory(s) as well as function of management and emergence of Management thought, know the process of planning, organizing and decision making, understand organization structures, know the principles of staffing, direction, coordination, control and leadership style and understand the different issues of organizational behaviour including motivation and group dynamics.
Unit 1: Introduction (Lectures: 10)
Concept, Role, Importance, Nature, Scope, Functions and Process of Management; Management as science and art; Difference between Management and Administration; Managerial and operative functions; Management in modern industry.
Unit 2: Evolution of Management Thought (Lectures: 10)
Early contributors to Management Thought; Emergence of Management Thought; Scientific management; Administrative Theory of Management; Bureaucratic Organization; Behavioural approach (Neo Classical Theory); Human Relations Movement; Systems approach and contingency approach; MBO.
Unit 3: Planning and Organizing (Lectures: 15)
Planning: Concept, Features, Importance and Steps of planning; Types of planning- Standing plans and single use plans; Objectives, Policies, Strategies, Procedures; Decision making; Formal and Informal organizations; Organization structure: Line and Staff organization, Committee organization, Project organization, Matrix organization; Delegation of Authority; Centralization and Decentralization; Departmentalization: Concept and Types; Span of Management.
Unit 4: Staffing, Directions, Coordination and Control (Lectures: 15)
Concept, Features and Elements of staffing; Concept and Principles of Direction; Supervision; Style, Functions and Importance of Leadership; Formal and Informal Leadership, Qualities of a good leader.
Concept of Coordination; Features of Coordination; Nature of Control, relationship between Planning and Control, Elements of Control System.
Unit 5: Organizational Behaviour (Lectures: 25)
Concept, Nature and scope of Organizational Behaviour (OB); Challenges and opportunities for OB; OB models; Human Behaviour: Personality; Perception; Learning; Attitude (Concept, Feature and Importance); Reinforcement ; Motivation: Concept and Importance, Hierarchy of needs theory, Theory X and Y, Motivation-Hygiene theory, Vroom’s expectancy theory; Job Satisfaction; Organisational Power and Politics; Group Dynamics : Concept and Type of groups, Group development stages; Management of conflict; Teams Vs Groups; Management of Change and Organizational development; Organizational culture.
