Course Objective: 1. To study the diversity of microbial world. 2. To study the structural and economical importance of prokaryotes and eukaryotes 3. To learn about the concept of virus and its replication.
Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion of the course the candidate will be able to – 1. Identify and classify diverse group of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. 2. Understand the structure of viruses, their mode of replication and viral assay.

COURSE TITLE: MICROBIAL DIVERSITY (THEORY)

Unit 1. General characteristics of prokaryotes No. of hours: 10
General account & economic importance of Mycoplasma, Actinomycetes, Cyanobacteria and Archaea
Unit 2. Fungi No. of hours: 10
General characteristics of fungi including habitat, distribution, structure and reproduction and economic importance
Unit 3. Algae No. of hours:10
General characteristics of algae including habitat, distribution,structure and reproduction and economic importance
Unit 4. Protozoa No. of hours:10
General characteristics of protozoa with special reference to Amoeba, Paramecium, Plasmodium and Giardia
Unit 5. Nature and properties of viruses No. of hours:10
Physiochemical properties of virus, Classification system (ICTV, Baltimore), Chemistry and structural organisation of viruses (TMV, Animal viruses and Bacteriophage). Concept of viroid, virusoids, satellite viruses and prions. Viral assay (plaque assay)
Unit 6. Lytic and lysogenic cycle No. of hours:10
Life cycle of Bacteriophages with special reference to E. coli and T4, Lysogenic conversion, induction and significance, one step multiplication curve.
