Learning Objective and Learning Outcome:

On completion of the course the students will be able to:

  1. State and analyze the Meaning, Nature and Scope of Education
  2. Establish the relationship between Education and Philosophy
  3. Understand Indian schools of philosophy
  4. Understand Western schools of philosophy
  5. Know the Meaning, Nature and Scope of Educational Sociology
  6. Understand the relationship between Education and Sociology
  7. Know and understand various Social issues in Indian Scenario.
  8. Understand the role of different Social agencies in Education.

Unit-I: Meaning, Nature and Scope of Education

  1. Education – Meaning, Nature and Scope
  2. Aims and Objectives - Individualistic and Socialistic
  3. Agencies of Education – Formal, Non formal, Informal

Unit-II: Schools of Philosophy and their Educational Contribution

  1. Main Features of Indian Philosophy and Education
  2. Glimpses Western Philosophy and Education
  3. Great Educators and their educational philosophy – (i) Rabindranath Tagore, (ii) Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Unit-III: Sociology in Education

  1. Sociology – Scientific Study of Society; Process of Socialization and Education
  2. Primary Concept of – Social group, Social stratification, social mobility and Social change
  3. Contemporary Issues – Globalization and Privatization
